The Young Doctors (1961)
Character of Interest: Lucy Grainger (played by Aline MacMahon) Orthopaedic Surgeon
We first see senior physician Dr. Grainger at a mortality board hearing. Interestingly, she is smoking. When a patient is found to have a disturbance on the knee, there is a question as to whether or not it is osteosarcoma. A biopsy sample must be sent to experts for their opinion. The two male pathologists want to get it out right away, but all the lab assistant have gone for the night. "Can you type", the male doctor asks Dr. Grainger. "How do you think I worked my way through college?" she replies.

The Interns (1962)
Character of Interest: Mado (played by Haya Harareet), Surgeon
As we start the film, we see all the interns arriving. There are, in fact, two women, though only one will concern the story. Mado (she doesn't seem to have a last name, unlike the male doctors) has just started her surgical internship, with Dr. Riccio as her senior physician. He is discouraging. Women do not belong in medicine, according to Dr. Riccio, because they will all eventually quit to start families. It isn't until he discovers that Mado, in fact, has a child - who she has been supporting throughout her internship, that he decides she has a place in surgery.
